1. Vegetable Garden and School Orchard-
In the spring of 2010 we had a vision of starting a school garden. That spring we put in 3 raised beds for vegetables. We now have 13 raised beds as well as two raised salad tables. We planted 13 fruit trees over the past 3 years and had began to enjoy the Fruits off some of the trees this past summer and a looking forward to more this year. We also have a Living Classroom located in our Orchard where teachers bring their students out for classes in the fresh air.
2. Healthy Cooking and Eating-
Once a week in our after school program we have Healthy Cooking Classes where students have to use their math skills for measurements ingredients and do research on the nutritional benefits of what they are preparing that week. We have visiting Chefs also come to instruct cooking classes. The meals a lot of the time are from ingredients from our school garden when ever possible .
3. Recycling-
Our Student led Green Team is responsible for our recycling program under teacher supervision. We have students that are responsible for gathering the recyclables from each classroom weekly. We have students who are Can Crushers that take care of all of the aluminum cans as well as students who break down boxes. A lot of the recyclable materials like cardboard and plastic bottles are then reused to create art project.
4.Community Partnerships and Grant awards-
Over the past four years we have received 7 grants for the Baltimore Office of Sustainability as well as an ECO grant from the National Wildlife Federation. We have partnered with Parks and People for 3 Tree Plantings. We also have been awarded a grant in the past from Fuel Up to Play 60 and won a Community Build from the United Way, NFL and Play 60.
5.Energy Conservation-
Our school holds Wednesday Half Lights Off Day to show our school community how easy it is to conserve energy. We have also have hosted a couple pledge promise with BGE and Energy. Our students have been participating in Energy Classes this school year as well and have conducted Energy Audits throughout the school.
